Set piece for Australian Academy Festival of Music, C Grade
Jazz Ensemble, 2002. |
|
 |
"Blues
for Mr. Bump" is a straight-ahead blues in F that provides
a solo feature for the drummer. It is scored for full big
band but is playable by a smaller ensemble as indicated on
the first page of the score. Optional parts are also provided
for Flute, Clarinet, Horn in F and Tuba. The main theme is
a simple blues theme that is stated in unison by the ensemble.
The ensemble chorus provides space for the drummer to stretch
out with some solo fills. A solo section provides space for
solos by any other player in the ensemble. Solo sheets have
been provided for Bb, Eb and Treble and Bass clef instruments
with two fully notated choruses. These solos are suggestions
only and students should be encouraged to improvise their
own solos.
The
"Mr. Bump" in the title, is my brother-on-law Dave,
who also happens to be a jazz drummer - we still think of
him as family anyway!

CARNE
ASADA |
 |
| Intermediate
Level
Set piece for Music Fest 2007 presented by Prestige Music,
B Grade Jazz Ensemble. |
|
 |
"Carne
Asada" is a smooth bossa nova for an intermediate level
jazz ensemble. The inspiration for the title came while munching
on some carne asada at a rather laid back barbeque in a park
on a visit to Palm Springs.
This
chart features solo space for the 2nd Trumpet and 1st Trombone
players. All rhythm section parts are fully notated for younger
players.
Trumpet
players are required to double on Flugel. If flugelhorns are
not available, have the trumpets play into the stand or use
bucket mutes.
I
hope you enjoy performing this chart! |

solos to provide a starting point for less experienced improvisers

FIRST
IMPRESSIONS |
|
| Beginner/Intermediate
Level
Set piece for Australian Academy Festival of Music, C Grade
Jazz Ensemble, 2005. |
|

|
"First
Impressions" is in the style of a laid-back minor blues.
The chart is written to work equally well with a smaller group
as well as a full jazz ensemble. The arrangement features
plenty of unison writing to help younger players establish
confidence within their sections as well as more independence
between sections.
A
solo section is included and may be opened up to feature any
number of soloists in the group. If using the minimum required
instrumentation, I would suggest using only 1st Alto Sax and
2nd Trumpet as soloists. To help out less experienced improvisers,
individual solo sheets with two choruses have been included
for Treble Clef, Bas Clef, Bb and Eb instruments. It is suggested
that students should be encouraged to improvise their own
solos.

Level
Set piece for Australian Academy Festival of Music, Jiants
of Jazz Ensemble, 2003. |
|
|
"Groove
Tonic" features an energetic shuffle groove with plenty
to keep all members of the ensemble busy. The main theme is
spread around the band and requires a certain amount of flexibility,
especially in the Trumpet section. The sax section is put
through the paces with 24 measures of soli chorus. It requires
a big fat sound and plenty of agility. Solo space is provided
for 1st Alto Sax, 1st Tenor Sax, 2nd Trumpet, 1st Trombone,
Guitar and Piano. There is also a full ensemble shout chorus
that gives the whole band a chance to wail.

 |
“On

“Yardbird Suite” changes) played at an up tempo
swing. The 1st Alto Sax and 2nd Trumpet, who are also provided
with individual solo space, play the head in unison. Written

The

chart begins with a slow, gospel style introduction, featuring
the 1st Trumpet, which gives way to a funky groove set up
by the rhythm section. Solo

be opened up to allow for more soloists and the brass section
is featured a Capella (that means with no clothes on!)

TRAFFIC
JAM |
|
| Advanced
Level
Set piece for Australian Academy Festival of Music, Jiants
of Jazz, 2005. |
 |
"Traffic
Jam" is a lively, up-tempo swing piece that was inspired
by the mayhem and frustrations of rush hour travel! The arrangement
of the main theme features a small combo of Alto Sax, Trumpet,
Trombone and Guitar with the rhythm section providing rhythmic
counterpoint.
Solo
space is provided for 1st Tenor Sax, 2nd Trumpet, 1st Alto
Sax and 1st Trombone. Written solos have been included on
separate sheets for less experienced improvisers.
A
shout chorus provides the band with an opportunity to let
loose. There is a fair amount of independence between sections
in this chorus so be sure to count carefully. The ending brings
everything back home to the solitude of the garage for another
day.
"I
love Traffic Jam even though it is a bit tough! The voicing
is really nice with some great chords. Well Done!"
- David Adelt, Instrumental Music Instructor,
Education Queensland
"Traffic Jam is a good chart - it's interesting and challenging."
-David Humphreys, Adjudicator, Australian Academy
Festival of Music 2005

WHIPLASH |
|
| Advanced
Level
Set piece for Australian Academy Festival of Music, A Grade
Jazz Ensemble, 2002. |
|
 |
"Whiplash"
is a funk style composition that features the Trumpet section,
with solo space for the 2nd Trumpet and the Drummer. The drum
part has a relatively difficult, written pattern that sets
up the groove, in conjunction with the bass, for the entire
arrangement. Have the bass and drums work together to get
this groove sounding relaxed and comfortable. Ensemble cues
have also been included on the drum part throughout to the
the drums to support the ensemble. |
